..Buntings

Image
Just an update with the snow bunting- a couple of pictures. The first one is mine- as close as I could get. Maybe my phone has some more picture taking features that I haven't learned yet- must get to that. The second 2 were taken by one of the nurses on a ledge outside her window. I think thats cheating- and the zoom on her iphone seems pretty decent as well. Oh, and the white birds in the picture last post- of course, snow geese! Not that I could have got much closer to them without better boots, but I'm glad I didn't try- this is their breeding territory and they nest out in the open so would have hated to have disturbed that.

Week Two

..well, the start of week 2 anyways. Dayshifts are generally busy and it looks as though I will be days for the month. My partner prefers the nightshift so there we go. The Centre is open from 830 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and outside of that a paramedic works the Emerg and there is a nurse on call. Patients have to call nurse on call after hours, or if it is a walk in to Emerg, security lets them in. So dayshift is much busier, but nightshift sees the more "interesting" clientel. Snow buntings. I was hoping to have a picture or two of this pretty birdie this week, but they seem to be pretty shy. I either don't have my phone on me when one is stopped close enough, or they take off as I get set to take the picture. They are the only bird in town besides the occassional raven, and the seagulls over the dump. Their song is like a cross between a robin and a canary and they are very pretty- almost all white with some black accents. Maybe later this week I can get something. Bird f...

Week One

The start of summer in the north. The weather has reached a balmy 3 degrees with a mix of sun, fog, rain and wet snow. a lot of the snow has melted- there is still a lot where it was deep, in crevaces and valleys. Not much green to be had- no trees or bushes..grass..flowers.. The area is quite flat- other than close to the water you can look all around and see everything for miles. The hamlet and from here to the airport are sand and gravel over rock- very messy when it is wet or rainey- the sand is very light and goes everywhere- think it will be very dusty when it all dries out as well. The 24 hour of light thing is wierd- but doesnt reall affect dayshift. In fact the night person also works dayshift- just no staff and less patients. First picture was around 9:30 p.m. and the second at 4:30 a.m. (it was a little foggy that morning, but you get the effect. Once again the staff at the Center are very nice and the community people friendly and pleasant to deal with. Although all of ...
